Is email terminally ill?

This is the question asked by ComputerWorld. And they think that what they observe (Thunderbird, the email companion of the successful browser Firefox, is growing much more slowly than Firefox) is actually the tip of the iceberg.

Email is slowly dying from SPAM and users are leaving email for more protected (for now?) communication spaces like Instant Messaging or Twitter.
